Nanotecnología para cardiología y neumococo (NanoCardioCoco)

The objective of this project is to develop two biosensors: one applied to pneumococcus disease and the other to cardiovascular diseases.

This project, which will take place during the next four years, has a finance of more than 2 million euro. This is in response to, on one hand, the necessity in the market for medical diagnostic tools, as those which are currently commercialised are very expensive devices, complicated to use and many times are not effective. On the other hand, NanoCardioCoco is directed at the two principal causes of mortality: cardiovascular and infectious diseases. In the first instance, two cases have been selected: one related to the diagnosis in real time with a microchip for risk episodes, and another more preventative and personalised based on obesity indices. With respect to infectious diseases, as a model pneumococcus (Staphylococcus pneumococcus) has been selected as it is a bacteria which causes a variety of infectious processes: from pneumonia to meningitis, otitis, sinusitis etc.
